When
I was in college working towards my teaching credential
in industrial arts, I was fortunate to enroll in
a woodworking class with Dr. John Kassay. Dr. Kassay
was working on his book, “The Book of Shaker
Furniture,” later published in 1980. My first
project was a Shaker Round Stand Table created from
Dr. Kassay’s drawings.
The challenges of designing, shaping, assembling
and finishing wooden furniture was very compelling.
This experience would follow me as I moved through
a series of careers as a teacher, printer, investment
advisor and product-marketing manager in computer
software.
Over the past twenty years I have enhanced my woodworking
skills by attending classes with several of the
most accomplished craftsmen in their field. My instructors
have included Craig V. Stevens, Kelly Mehler, Graham
Blackburn and Lon Schleining. The books and the
teachings of James Krenov, David Charlesworth and
Tage Frid have also inspired me. In 1998 I built
my woodworking studio.
The transition to full time furnituremaker has been
a joyful one. I look forward each day to entering
my studio and immersing myself in the process of
creating a new project. I take great pride in the
selection of the wood as well as the placement and
matching of grain and color for each design. I’m
thankful for this opportunity and look forward to
sharing with you the joy of designing and owning
a quality handmade piece of furniture.
